I was recently inspired by these words:
Talking ourselves out of problems = quick fix
Behaving ourselves out of problems = long term results
As a counselor, one of the things I have come to realise is that people love to TALK about their problems, their issues, their challenges. But when I say, so how do you think you can help yourself in this challenge? Most people get so uncomfortable with the idea of doing something about their problems that they avoid my question altogether and continue complaining and talking about the problems! The reality is that more than 50% of people who go for counseling have no real desire to really change their life choices to enable them to resolve their problems. They just want someone else to agree with them that their life is hard.
One of the key things in which I tend to focus on in my counseling practice is to get people to take responsibility by changing their behaviour patterns to solve their problems. Let me give you an example.
Can a person who says, 'I want to lost weight' and continues to consume high calorie unhealthy food actually lose weight? Obviously not, this person must behave himself/herself out of this weight issue by choosing the right foods and exercising right.
We tell children to behave themselves, but most adults do not behave themselves. They are like children with lack of self control, over indulging in rich unhealthy foods, overspending on things they do not need, over indulging in negative thoughts and emotions, indulging in negative behaviours. Can children behave themselves if adults cannot? This explains why only a very very small percentage of people in the world can truly achieve their goals in a wholesome manner.
Bad behaviour in adults is a real problem. Obviously, it is the cause of most problems we face on earth from crimes to social and environmental concerns. So think about how you can change your behaviour today, not only to transform your own life but to have a positive affect on those around you as well.
Behave yourself out of your problem and you will see long term results.
